Ice Dam Prevention
Our state-of-the-art heat tape systems are designed to mitigate the potential for ice dam formations on the edges of your roof, while also protecting gutters and downspouts from freezing - helping to give you peace of mind during periods of heavy winter snowfall.
What is an Ice Dam?
An Ice Dam is a barrier of ice that is created when warm heat escapes from the attic of your home and warms the surfaces of your roof. This warming melts the snow and the water begins to run downhill as intended. However, when the temperature is below 32 degrees outside (freezing), the melted water will begin to collect and freeze shortly after it reaches the non-heated edges of the roof. The ice dam is now formed, and as it freezes and enlarges, the continually melting snow water is forced to move back up your roof. Your roof shingles were never designed to contain water going in the opposite direction, and thus, water can enter your home, sheet rock and insulation from beneath the shingles.
Not only can this cause serious damage to the home’s structure, but if affected areas are not dried thoroughly, mold and mildew can form, leading to the potential for respiratory issues.

Heat Tape Systems
Prior to a snow event, the best external prevention for your roof is the application of heat tape (also known as heat cables or de-icing cables). When correctly installed, this solution will cause snow to melt from the edges of your roof, will prevent gutters and downspouts from freezing, and allow water to flow to the gutters and valleys of your roof.
River Roofing Bend’s ice prevention system controller allows for automatic operation of the heat taped zones on your roof, your heated gutters and downspouts. All controllers we offer use a remote temperature sensor that is hard wired into the controller. The sensor is placed outside the home in a shaded area. The sensor reading is used by the controller to turn your new system on/off.
We can specify a two, four or eight zone controller that operates two, four or eight separate branch circuits to obtain the coverage needed to protect your home or business. Our controllers are set to turn on your system at 38 degrees. It also has a low temperature cut out (LTC) that is set to 9 degrees. The LTC mode saves energy by keeping the heat taped zones turned off when temperatures are below the threshold at which solar gain and heat loss melts snow or additional snow accumulates. Both temperature set points are easily field adjustable to suit site specific conditions if needed.
River Roofing-Bend has performed many successful and long-lasting heat-tape installations for both home and commercial structures throughout Deschutes County and Central Oregon. Our roofing systems are also fully warrantied - here's what's included:
